January 8, 2023, 48, Mount Olive –

Michael Jonathan Welch, at the age of 48, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly early Sunday morning, January 8, 2023, at his home.

Mr. Welch, a native of Cumberland County, had been involved in high school athletics, particularly football and soccer.  He had graduated from Georgia Southern University and was the holder of two bachelor’s degrees.  His earlier working career involved financial planning and investing which led him to be a small business consultant.  In 2008, he joined United Parcel Service (UPS) and became a member of its management team in the Goldsboro location. 

Jon, as he was known by his family, or Mike, as he was known in the workplace, is survived by his mother, Patricia Powell Welch, with whom he shared a home in Mount Olive; a brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Addie Welch, and two beloved nieces, Georgia Welch and Greenley Welch, all of Cumming, Ga.; two aunts, Jo Stephenson Johnson of Mount Olive, and Fay Raynor of Eastover; cousins, Brandon Raynor, Todd Raynor, Jay Johnson, Edward Johnson, and Keith Johnson, along with their families.  Also surviving is the UPS Goldsboro workforce, Mike’s second family.

Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his father, William Francis Welch. in 2000.

A service to remember the life of Michael Jonathan Welch will be Friday, January 13, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.  Immediately following the service, there will be an opportunity to greet and express condolences to his family.  A private interment will be in Layfayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.
