Syble Kay Hamby Fortner, age 84, passed away Wednesday evening at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Orin McQueen Hamby and Margaret Destaffino Hamby and the wife of the late Charles Earl Fortner. Syble played basketball for Fairforest High School in Spartanburg, SC, and was very proud to have won a state championship. She was a founding member of Love Memorial Baptist Church where she was a dedicated servant and faithful member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She delivered Meals On Wheels for over 20 years and retired from RG Barry Company.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Sunday, January 8th at 2:30 pm at Love Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Toler officiating. Family members will greet friends at the church immediately following the service.

Mrs. Fortner is survived by her children, Marilyn F. Froeber, Jill A. Swinson and husband, Timothy, and Glenn R. Fortner and wife, Dionne; a brother, Neil T. Hamby; and her eight grandchildren, Deanna Amelia Froeber, Justin Charles Froeber, Jason Edward Froeber, Bryan Allen Swinson, Kevin Charles Swinson, Kathryn Ann Swinson, Abigail Faith Swinson and Henry Charles Fortner.
