Martha Meredith Liles

Martha Meredith Liles

December 8, 2022, 95, Goldsboo –

Martha Meredith Liles, age 95, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2022, at Brookdale Country Day Road in Goldsboro, N.C. Meredith was born in Goldsboro to Orion Clinton Liles and Hortense Foushee Liles on March 16, 1927. She was the last of 11 children. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brothers and sisters: David Lee Liles, Henry Clinton Liles, Dorothy Liles Radford, Katherine Liles Warren, Roy Milton Liles, Ada Gray Liles, Gladys Liles Stephens, Charles Vander Liles, and Hortense Liles Rouse.

She is survived by her sister, Hilda Liles Strider. Hilda and Meredith began to live together in 1962 and since that time has been virtually inseparable. They both always introduced each other as “my sister and best friend”. She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews spread out all over the United States.

Meredith was a graduate of Goldsboro High School and Meredith College. Upon returning to Goldsboro, she worked as an eighth-grade teacher at New Hope School for three years. Following that, she worked for many years at Cherry Hospital, always cheerful and willing to help those most in need. Later, she completed her working career by serving as the secretary at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a charter member.

While in good health, Meredith rarely missed a Sunday church service and was active in all facets of Madison Avenue. Other than family, nothing was more important to Meredith than her church and its congregation. She continued her support of Madison Avenue until the day of her death.

In their later years, as their health began to decline she and Hilda needed a caregiver and that person was Joan Daly. Little did the family know at the time just how important and special that decision would become. It cannot be overstated to say how much Joan has done to provide a high quality of life for both Hilda and Meredith. Almost from the beginning, they thought of Joan as a newly found younger sister. In fact, since moving into Brookdale, individual pictures of all of Hilda and Meredith’s family have hung on the wall in their apartment. Last year, at their request, a picture of Joan was hung on the wall with the rest of their siblings. No one else has ever earned that privilege. So, thank you Joan. The love and kindness you have always shown to them are immeasurable.

The family also wishes to express thanks to Julia Russell as well as all of the staff at Brookdale Country Day Road for their assistance, support, love, and comfort.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Meredith’s memory to

A formal memorial service for Meredith will be held on a future date and place to be announced later. Interment will be at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 S. US Hwy 117, Dudley, NC at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 with the Reverend Adam Street officiating.
