Betty Johnson Buchanan

Betty Johnson Buchanan

September 19, 2022, 82, Goldsboro –

Betty Johnson Buchanan, 82, completed her earthly journey and began resting in the Lord on Monday, September 19, 2022. Betty was born in Smythe County, Virginia to the late Charles W. and Lona Heath Johnson on August 20, 1940. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, James Wayne “Buck” Buchanan; and brothers, Kenneth, Harry, Randy, Joe, Jimmy and Irvin Johnson.

Working at the Base Exchange at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for many years, Betty created and maintained many friendships with her fellow workers and those who shopped the store. With a welcoming personality and warm smile, Betty offered a beautiful greeting to all, making them feel right at home as they entered the exchange.

Actively involved as a member of Adamsville Baptist Church, Betty was a constant support to the various ministries. Giving of her time, gifts, and talents, she was always willing to do whatever she could to further the kingdom of God. Possessing a beautiful voice, she was glad to offer her gifts in praise to the Lord during worship. Though small in stature, Betty was filled to the brim with a big heart that showered love on all she met.

With a love for her community and a desire to see its prosperity, Betty often found ways to give back through volunteering. For many years, she sought the opportunity to volunteer with the Wayne County Agricultural Fair where community members and visitors alike were welcomed with her generous spirit.

Of utmost importance to Betty was her family. She was the rock of her clan, a constant support, and ever willing to go the extra mile to see her family healthy and happy. Each opportunity to spend time with them was treasured, as she looked forward to every family gathering, meal, and visit. There was no better pastime than spending time with her family.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Adamsville Baptist Church followed by a service to celebrate her beautiful life at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Pat Kilby and Rev. Pete Williams officiating. Interment will be Friday, September 23, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. in the Middle Fork Cemetery, Chilhowie, Virginia.

Betty is survived by her sons, Mark Buchanan and wife, Diane and Steve Buchanan and wife, Shannon; grandchildren, Curtis, April, Mason, Dustin, Alexis, and Michael; and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Paul Johnson and wife, Martha and Herman “Turk” Johnson and wife, Penny; and sister, Jeanette Smith and husband, Joe.

In recent years, Betty welcomed the company and friendship of her dear friend, Jim Dixon.

The family would like to extend a special appreciation to 3HC who provided Hospice care allowing Betty to spend her final days at home.
