Elizabeth Howell Lewis

Elizabeth Howell Lewis

August 25, 2022, 94, Goldsboro –

Elizabeth Howell Lewis, 94, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Thursday afternoon, August 25, 2022. Elizabeth was born in Wayne County to the late John Richard and Minnie Massengill Howell on September 18, 1927. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Haskett Lewis; children, Archie H. Lewis, Jr., Mary Singleton Capps and Billy Haskett Lewis; sisters, Allene Oliverdoti and Lucille Hinnant; and brothers, Ralph Howell, John Richard Howell, Jr., Reuben Howell, Nelson Howell, Bud Howell and Wayland Howell.

With humble gratitude for the gift of eternal life through Christ Jesus, Elizabeth took every opportunity to share the love of Christ with all she met. Her love for children and heart for people of all ages was manifested in her genuine words of care and acts of kindness throughout the years. As a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, she faithfully worshiped her Lord and offered praise to Him every time the doors were opened as she was able to attend.

Seeing Elizabeth in her yard was a common sight for those who passed by her way, as her most precious time seemed to be spent enjoying God’s handiwork. Whether mowing her grass, working with her flowers, or pulling weeds, Elizabeth found great contentment in her yard. The sights and sounds of birds enjoying her many bird feeders was a great enjoyment for her. She delighted in relaxing on the back porch where she could watch the birds and butterflies as the gentle breeze passed by the time.

With deep affection for each member of her family, Elizabeth looked forward to gathering with them, no matter the occasion. From the biggest holiday feasts to simple meals around the table, any time with family was her greatest blessing. Always young at heart, Elizabeth loved the opportunity to laugh and make others laugh. She could converse with people of all backgrounds, never meeting a stranger and finding commonality with all.

As Elizabeth’s health declined over the last year, she was honored by the care of her daughters who ensured that she was never left alone. As she was honored, her daughters were equally blessed by being able to offer to her a portion of the love they had received through the years.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Elizabeth’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Eugene Hartley officiating. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Rose officiating.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Brenda Wiley and husband, Thomas of Goldsboro and Barbara Shelton and husband, Jimmy of Goldsboro; son, William Eugene Lewis and wife, Tosca of Salinas, CA; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Sarah Louise Raines of Mebane and Mary Frances Herring of Virginia.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
