Dollie Mae Swinson Kornegay

Dollie Mae Swinson Kornegay passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday evening, August 25th, with her two children at her side. She was a devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, “Mamie”, and “Mrs. Dollie” to so many. Her love for her family filled her with joy and was her greatest purpose in life. She inspired others with her courage and gave hope through her faith. She instilled lifelong values and lessons that will live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was born March 6th,1930, at the Swinson Boyette Home Place, the fourth child of Daniel Webster and Alice Boyette Swinson. She grew up in Duplin County on the family farm and always cherished her rural roots. She married Morris Clayton Kornegay on August 18, 1948, who preceded her in death in 1986. Together they raised a son, Dan, and a daughter, Claire. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard, especially tending to her flowers. She always had an open door for friends and family and enjoyed welcoming them to rock with her on her porch.

She was a faithful member of Bear Marsh Missionary Baptist Church where she was an active member of the Emma Pate Sunday School class. She retired from Duplin County Schools with twenty-five years of service as the Secretary for North Duplin Elementary. She provided much love and care for many children through her devoted years to her work and truly made a difference in the lives of many.

She was preceded in death by her parents Daniel Webster and Alice Boyette Swinson, her brother Daniel Warren Swinson, her husband, Morris Clayton Kornegay, her sister and brother in law Evelyn and Graham Corbett, and brother in laws Jim Butler and Harvey C. Allen.

She is survived by her children Dan Kornegay and wife Penny Moore of Faison, NC, Claire Kornegay Eloshway and husband Greg of Faison, NC; Grandchildren Krystal Kornegay Rose and husband Caleb of Mystic, CT, Lyndsey Eloshway Lee and husband Craig of Clayton, NC, Courtneay Kornegay Overbee and husband Jordan of Supply, NC, Katlyn Eloshway Rhodes and husband Brad of Faison, NC; Great Grandchildren Jack and Elijah Rose, Emma Claire and Collin Lee, Corbett and Fisher Overbee, and Jaxson Rhodes; Sisters Lillian Swinson Butler of Raleigh, NC and Thelma Swinson Allen of Warsaw, NC; along with many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Annie.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at three o’clock in the afternoon, on Tuesday August 30th, at Bear Marsh Missionary Baptist Church, 1649 Beautancus Road, Mt Olive, NC 28365. A reception will be held at the church fellowship hall immediately following the service, at which time the family will receive friends. A private interment will precede the service.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones at her home 725 Friendship Church Road, Faison NC, 28341 in the days preceding her service.
