Joseph Michael “Mike” Harrold

Joseph Michael “Mike” Harrold, 87, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2022, on his 35th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Betty “Betsy” Summerlin Harrold; his children, Brad Harrold (Jean) and Lisa Pace (Peter); his step-children, Doug Daughtry (Tammy) and Mary Charles Jacobs (David); his grandchildren, Charlie Pace (Anne) and Mary Frances Allison (James), Tristyn Daughtry, Drake Daughtry, Dylan Jacobs (Haley), and Cole Jacobs; and his great-grandchildren, Peter Irving Pace and Emma Louise Pace. He is also survived by his siblings, Judith Schneider and Tom Harrold.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Virginia Harrold; his brother, Bert Harrold; and his wife, Frances Tew Harrold.

A native of Athens, GA, Mike lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Gainesville High School, attended Cornell University and graduated from the University of Georgia, serving as 2nd Lt. in AFROTC. He served three years in the USAF, training in navigation at Harlingen, Texas, ECM training in Biloxi, Mississippi, and B-52 training at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. He rose to the rank of Captain serving as an Electronic Warfare Officer. He then began a long career running the family poultry business before moving to Pennsylvania with Intervet (now Merck).
He was an active member at St. Paul UMC, serving on many committees. He was a Sunday School teacher, President of the J. Paul Edwards class and Stephen Minister. He was also a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Golden Ks and ROMEO Clubs. He enjoyed golf, tennis, UGA football, reading books, telling tall tales, making friends and travelling.

A memorial service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. James H. Harry officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. A private interment will be held at Wayne Memorial Park.
