Fauci Tests Positive; 1,000 In NC Hospitalized; 156 Active Cases In Wayne County

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the face of America’s pandemic response through two White House administrations, has tested positive for the coronavirus. The 81-year-old Fauci is fully vaccinated and has received two booster shots. He is experiencing mild COVID-19 symptoms. That’s all according to a statement from the National Institutes of Health on Wednesday.

Fauci has not recently been in close contact with President Joe Biden or other senior government officials. He tested positive using a rapid antigen test. He will return to work at the NIH when he tests negative.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services says North Carolina is in about the same place it was almost a year ago when it comes to hospitalizations and cases. 925 patients were being treated in North Carolina hospitals with COVID-19 during the week ending last Saturday.

According to the Wayne County Health Department, as of May 25th, the most current information available, there are approximately 156 active COVID-19 cases in Wayne County. About 50% of residents are fully vaccinated. To date there have been an estimated 31,884 positive cases in the county and 404 deaths.

The Wayne County Health Department is offering free rapid COVID-19 testing Monday through Friday (excluding County holidays) starting at 8:30 a.m. at 1320 W. Grantham Street in Goldsboro (former Food Lion building in the Little River Square shopping center.) Other test locations are listed here.
