Wayne County All-Way Stops Coming

Wayne County All-Way Stops Coming

Nine Wayne County intersections will undergo all-way stop transformations to improve safety.

The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded nearly $500,000 contract to LMJ Pavement Marking LLC of Willow Spring to perform the work at the following intersections:

  • Airport Road at Mt. Carmel Church Road
  • Pikeville-Princeton Road at Hinnant Road
  • N.C. 111 at Zion Church Road
  • Indian Springs Road at Northeast Church Road
  • N.C. 55 at Camp Jubilee Road
  • U.S. 13 at Woodland Church Road/Durham Lake Road
  • N.C. 55 at Kelly Springs Road
  • N.C. 111 at Stoney Creek Church Road
  • N.C. 111 at Daw Pate Road

The changes will include additional stop signs, as well warning signs about an approaching stop sign and a new traffic pattern. Intersections that already have flashers will be changed so they flash red in all four directions.

The changes will be made between this month and the fall. The contractor has the flexibility to make the changes in any order, but must do each one on a Wednesday as weather permits. The contractor will be required to notify the public with signs two weeks before the change is made. Drivers who encounter these intersections on the day of installation should slow down, be cautious and follow directions from flaggers directing traffic.

The department’s traffic engineers evaluated the intersections and determined they warranted all-way stops to reduce the risk of crashes. The recommendations were made ,in part, due to the crash history, the angle of each intersection and the topography that can hinder the view of opposing traffic.

The NCDOT has more information about all-way stops online.
