Debra “Debbie” Brown Mathews, 67 of Indian Beach, passed away June 1, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 3 P.M. at Cornerstone Church, located at 401 N. Oak Forest Road in Goldsboro, NC.

Debbie was the beloved wife of Michael Mathews, of Chicago, IL since 2019, and proud mother of “the twins” Brian (Kelly) Glisson of Wilmington, NC and Amanda (Jared) Grantham of Surf City, NC. She was the loving grandmother “Gigi” of Hunter and Cole Glisson, and Kylee and Kalani Grantham, who all lit up her life. In addition, she considered Michael’s sons, Hunter (his wife and children) and Taylor, to be like family.

Debbie was born April 3, 1955 to Elbert Wayne and Betty Lou Brown of Kinston, NC. She is also survived by her sister Cindy Brown of Kinston, NC and brother Rod (June) Brown of Hampstead, NC, and her nephews Dyllan, Logan and Landon Brown. Additionally, her Aunt Mary Ann Harris of Morehead City, NC and many adored cousins and extended family members that she cherished.

Debbie was preceded in death by her father Elbert, Aunt Ella Faye Sessoms of Rocky Mount, NC and grandson Ryder Grantham.

Growing up in Kinston, NC Debbie fell in love with art and attended East Carolina University to pursue teaching. She spent most of her adult life and career in Goldsboro, NC passing on her passion for the arts to the students of Wayne County Public Schools, and made a lasting impression on so many. She truly loved her students and found great satisfaction in seeing them grow in their creativity and reach their full potential.

A visitation with the family will take place before the service from 2 P.M. to 3 P.M. in the Cornerstone Church Fellowship Hall.
