Hazel Marie Whaley Herring, known to most as Peggy Herring, passed away at her home in Goldsboro on Thursday, May 19, 2022. She was 80 years of age.

Visitation will be Monday, May 23, beginning at 1 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, with services to follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will take place after the service at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at Pink Hill. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark S. Hobbs.

Mrs. Herring was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. An astute homemaker, she kept the home fires burning while her military husband’s duties took them to many places to live. She was a devout Christian who instilled in her family the ideals of love, family, God, and country.

Surviving her are her husband, Lawrence E. “Johnny” Herring; four children, Johnny Glenn Herring and wife, Jodi, of Minnesota, Regina Ann Herring of Mount Olive, Wanda Kay Churchill and husband, Tim, of Emerald Isle, and Timothy Ray Herring and wife, Jennifer, of Clover, SC; grandchildren, Emily Perlbach and husband, Allen, Matthew Herring and wife, Leslie, Nicholas Herring and wife, Jewell, Anna Bennett, Ashley Bennett, Kayla Churchill Shively and husband, Jonathan, Kristin Churchill, Timothy Herring and wife, Tayler, Natalie Herring, Christopher Herring, Sophia Herring, and Allyson Herring; great-grandchildren, Caden Perlbach, Austin Perlbach, Mason Perlbach, and Maeve Herring; two sisters, Ruby Spence of Goldsboro, Sandra Casteen of Kenansville; a brother, Dennis Wayne Whaley of Beulaville; and many nieces and nephews.

One of 12 children, she was preceded in death by eight of her siblings, along with their parents, Robert and Lucinda Hill Whaley.
