April 29, 2022, 97, Goldsboro –
Virginia Roberts Smith Parkman passed away at home surrounded by her family on Friday, April 29, 2022, at the age of 97. Born in the Saulston community on July 12, 1924, she was the last surviving child of the late Herman Blackman Roberts and Bessie Anderson Roberts. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her sisters, Gertrude Smith, Geraldine Evans and Helene Faircloth; husband, William Henry Smith; daughter, Penny Smith Strohmenger; husband, Thomas Marion Parkman; and step-mother, Naomi Deans Roberts.
A long-time resident of the Belfast community, Virginia served as a telephone operator for many years with Southern Bell Telephone Company and was a member of the Pioneer Club. As her family grew and home tasks multiplied, she left the public workforce to devote her time as a wife and mother. An excellent caretaker and loving parent, she always placed her family as her top priority. Her faith in the Lord and love for others was apparent to all who knew her.
As the last surviving member of her immediate family, it was important to Virginia that she continue to tell their stories, pass on traditions, and carry on the legacy that she inherited.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Seymour Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held by the graveside on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Eureka Cemetery.
Virginia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Parkman Godwin and Rickey Godwin; grandson, Ryan Strohmenger; and several nieces and nephews she loved very much.
Virginia was a faithful supporter of In Touch Ministries and the ministry of Dr. Charles Stanley. To that end, the family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to In Touch Ministries, P.O. Box 79, Atlanta, GA 30356, intouch.org, so that others who are homebound will receive the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Goldsboro, NC. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
