She graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School in Elm City, NC, class of 1953, and went on to receive her nursing degree from Edgecombe Technical College in Rocky Mount, NC. Following her graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals in Richmond, VA and Durham, NC and at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, NC until her retirement. She made special trips to visit wherever her children, Wesley and Sharon, were stationed such as Germany, Hawaii, Korea, and the Philippines. Education was very important to her, she attended as many family graduations and school events as she could and would send her support when she could not be there in person. Mattie T. was also a wonderful cook and demonstrated her talents often, especially on New Year’s Day. Gardening was another one of Mattie’s hobbies, you could always find her outside on a beautiful spring day. Affectionately called “Moot” or “Nana” by her loved ones, she was one of the family historians, remembering names, birthdays, and odd facts about everyone. In addition, she collected pictures of every family member and displayed them lovingly in her home.
