Virginia Kearney Nix, 88, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022 at Wayne UNC Heath Care. Born in Wayne County on May 27, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Pauline Kearney.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pop Barbery and brother, Johnny “Bird” Kearney.
Virginia is survived by her children, Bennie F. Mozingo (Leona), Linda R. Shelton (Johnny), Pat A. Carlton (Martin), Athena Letchworth (Steve), and Nelson Smith; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann Stevens and Bonnie Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her hydrangeas and roses. She will be remembered by her family for her excellent cooking skills and her independent nature. Until recently, Virginia still lived in her own home and was able to drive herself wherever she needed to go. In previous years she worked as a long-distance truck driver and later worked with Walmart as a clerk and door greeter. Virginia was a member of Walker Memorial United Methodist Church.

A service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2022 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Weyant officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
