United Way Looks Back At 2021 Successes, Prepares For More In 2022 (PHOTOS)

(GDN) — In a year of challenges, United Way of Wayne County continued to persevere and lead the way helping residents.  The local United Way held its Annual Meeting Tuesday morning at First Baptist Church, with several awards being presented to people and organizations that have strived to make a difference in Wayne County. 

Donna Phillips, 2021 Board Chair, started the program by acknowledging the continued challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and how the community has stayed “connected“. She said, “In two of the toughest years in our history, we have not only been able to continue to support our community partners; but increased the program support from 16 to 20 programs.  We not only supported the needs of COVID. but created a strong collaboration with the Wayne County Health Department, Wayne County Public Schools, and many other agencies”.

These are the awardees and those that received special recognitions on Tuesday:

  • Spirit of Wayne Award – Changed Lives – First Bank dba Select Bank
  • Spirit of Wayne Award – Fair Share – Goldsboro Builder’s Supply
  • Spirit of Wayne Award – Per Capita – Jackson & Sons (Honorable Mention for Crawford Henderson)
  • Spirit of Wayne Award – Extra Mile-Special Events – Sentry Insurance (Honorable Mention for Norwayne Middle School and Angela Gibson)
  • Campaign Chairman’s Award – Sharon Dilley, Jackson & Sons
  • Campaign Coordinator of the Year – Buddy Davis, Southco Distributing
  • Committee Member of the Year – Scott Satterfield
  • Outgoing United Way Committee Chair – Walter Krentz
  • Outgoing United Way Board Member – Greg Shackelford
  • Outgoing Board Chair Award – Donna Phillips
  • United Way of North Carolina Spirit Award – Wayne County Health Department
  • Emil Rosenthal Volunteer of the Year Award – Dr. David Tayloe
  • Sherry Pietrangelo received a special recognition for her 25 years of service to UWWC 

Ten investing companies or organizations were also recognized for investing in United Way of Wayne County at 100% participation. Those are as follows:

Also, UW Board Chair Donna Phillips passed the gavel to new Board Chair Walter Krentz.
