Women’s Basketball: UMO Takes Down UNC Pembroke, Improves To 11-0

Mount Olive – The University of Mount Olive women’s basketball team defeated UNC Pembroke 61-53 on Monday evening. This win takes the Trojans to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in conference action.

INSIDE THE SCORE

UMO started out strong and built up a 6-0 lead thanks to a jump shot from Sherry Johnson with 8:10 remaining. The Braves answered back tying 6-6 with 6:38 remaining. Mount Olive took back the momentum and led 15-10 with 1:40 left in the first quarter. The Trojans closed out the first quarter with a 19-14 lead. 

The start of the second quarter saw the Trojans increase their lead to 21-14. The Braves rallied back to come within four points of the Trojans with 7:45 remaining, but Mount Olive still led 32-25 at halftime. 

The third quarter was quiet until Azariah Fields sunk two free throws to put the Trojans ahead by eight. UMO owned the rest of the third quarter, and the Trojans went into the fourth and final quarter with a 47-34 advantage. 

The Braves decreased the Trojans’ lead 47-42 with 6:28 remaining, and three minutes later, UNC Pembroke made it 51-49. However, the Trojans did not stop fighting as they pulled away for the 61-53 victory. 

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS

Fields led the Trojans with 21 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while Johnson grabbed eight rebounds and scored 15 points.
