Men’s Basketball: UMO Falls To Chowan In Buzzer-Beater Finale

MURFREESBORO – The University of Mount Olive men’s basketball team fell to Chowan University 74-73 Thursday. This loss takes the Trojans to 9-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

INSIDE THE SCORE

Chowan scored the first two points of the contest with19:21 remaining. The Trojans answered back with a four-point run with 17:54 left.

Later in the first half the Hawks achieved a 31-14 with 4:36 remaining. Mount Olive could not come within 10 of Chowan for the remainder of the first half and trailed 37-27 at halftime.

UMO came out strong in the second half closing the gap to 41-32 with 16:58 remaining. The Hawks regained their momentum from the first half and increased their lead to 49-35 with 14:58 remaining.

The Trojans answered and made it 55-49 with 11:53 remaining. With 9:40 left the Trojans cut the deficit to 57-56 thanks to Shakei Hines’ free throw.

Cole Johnson’s three-pointer then pushed UMO ahead by four points with 7:43 remaining. With 0:59 remaining a jump-shot form Michael Brown put the Trojans ahead 73-70, but Chowan answered with a layup that decreased the Trojan lead to one. 

The Trojans’ momentum came to a halt when the Hawks made a jump shot with 0:01 remaining in the contest. Chowan University ended up winning the game 74-73.

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS

Trayvon Ferrell led the Trojans with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Brown took home 14 points. 

HAWKS LEADERS

The Hawks were led by Jay Estime with 22 points.
