Rep. Bell Recognized As “2021 Defender of Public Safety”

The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association has recognized House Majority Leader John R. Bell, IV as a 2021 Defender of Public Safety for his work during the 2021 legislative session to support law enforcement and public safety in North Carolina.

During a session which saw a heavy concentration of law enforcement and public safety related reform bills, Representative Bell dedicated time and effort during the session advocating for law enforcement issues important to the NCSA, which impact the office of sheriff, local communities, and the state.

“Representative Bell took a leadership role in advancing the legislative priorities of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association which represents all 100 sheriffs in the State,” said Sheriff Ed McMahon, President of the Association. “As a result, our sheriffs can be assured the profession of law enforcement will be able to recruit and retain individuals who will serve our communities with integrity and we are better equipped to protect the lives, liberties, and property of North Carolina’s citizens.”

Representative Bell’s legislative district is served by Sheriff Lemmie Smith of Greene County, Sheriff Steve Bizzell of Johnston County, and Sheriff Larry Pierce of Wayne County.

“I am truly honored to be recognized for my work in support of law enforcement and public safety in North Carolina,” said Rep. Bell. “As elected officials, it is our sworn duty to uphold law and order and ensure the safety of the public. I am proud to stand in strong support of our law enforcement community and make sure they have the resources they need to protect the citizens of North Carolina.”

During the 2021 legislative session, the General Assembly considered hundreds of bills and enacted dozens of laws that had a direct impact on law enforcement and public safety in North Carolina.

The mission of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association, Inc. is to serve as the statewide voice to protect, promote, preserve, and enhance the Office of Sheriff in North Carolina through education, training, and legislative initiatives that increase public safety and protect the rights of the citizens of North Carolina. Proudly serving the sheriffs and citizens of North Carolina since 1922.
