MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men’s basketball team defeated Barton College 85-71 on Tuesday evening. The win takes the Trojans to 9-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The Trojans started strong with Michael Brown scoring the first two points of the contest with 19:32 remaining, but Barton quickly tied it up 2-2 all with 18:06 remaining.
The 14-minute mark saw the Trojans’ lead grow to four points with a layup from Javian Cannady. However, the Bulldogs took an 18-16 lead with 12:48 remaining.
Prior to four lead changes the Trojans went into the second half down 40-38.
UMO came out into the second half with a layup from Alan Treakle making it 40-40, but Barton did not give up as the Bulldogs took a 57-52 with 10:59 remaining.
The dominating Trojan defense did a good job of stopping the Bulldogs, and UMO took a 64-61 lead with 7:45 remaining. Mount Olive stayed in control for the remainder of the contest as the Trojans won the game 85-71.
MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Treakle led the Trojans with 24 points, while Matthias Caver grabbed nine rebounds.
BULLDOG LEADERS
The Bulldogs were led by Malik Bryant with 27 points.
KEY STAT
The Trojans scored 42 points in the paint, while the Bulldogs had 32 points in the paint.
