Men’s Basketball: UMO Takes Down King University

MOUNT OLIVE – The University of Mount Olive men’s basketball team defeated the Tornado of King University 79-68 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Trojans improve to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

King opened the contest with a jump shot 2-0, but Mount Olive took a three-point lead over the Tornado with a free throw from Michael Brown 9-6 with 15:08 remaining in the first half.

Thanks to a jump shot from Darius Spragley, the Trojan’s lead grew to 16-11 with 8:10 remaining. With 6:26 remaining UMO increased its lead to 23-16.

However, the Tornado responded, and they decreased the Trojans’ lead to one point going into the second half.

The Tornado scored the first points in the second half to take a 30-29 lead, but with 19:09 remaining, Brown tied up the contest at 30. UMO increased its lead to six points with a pair of free throws from Spragley.

Later in the half the Trojans’ lead ballooned to 66-49, and the Mount Olive offense could not be stopped as the Trojans ended up winning the game 79-68. 

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS

Cole Johnson led the Trojans with 18 points, while Matthias Caver took home 11 rebounds and 12 points.

TORNADO LEADERS

The Tornados were led by Isaiah Curry with eight rebounds.

KEY STAT

The Trojans took advantage of their points off turnover with 22, and the Tornado had 10.
