Women’s Basketball: UMO Takes Down Lees-McRae College

BANNER ELK – The University of Mount Olive women’s basketball team defeated the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 66-61 on Tuesday. This win takes the Trojans to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

INSIDE THE SCORE

UMO took the first lead of the contest with two free throws from Azariah Fields with 9:14 left in the first quarter. The UMO offense then went on a 6-0 run to earn a six-point lead over the Bobcats. The Trojans headed into the second quarter with a 23-13 lead.

Mount Olive continued to expand its advantage to a 14-point lead with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. The Trojans remained in control for the remainder of the half as they went into halftime with a 40-28 lead.

The Trojans scored the first four points of the third quarter to increase their lead to 16 with 9:19 remaining in the quarter. The Bobcats closed the gap to nine points last in the third quarter, but the Trojans went into the final quarter with a 59-48 lead.

The Trojans started slowly in the fourth quarter and allowed Lees-McRae to decrease the deficit to five points with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter. The Bobcats continued to press, and with 1:41 left in the contest, they cut the Trojans’ lead down to 64-61.

However, the Trojans did not allow the Bobcats to complete the comeback, and the Trojans held off the Bobcats to get the 66-61 victory.

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS

Fields led the Trojans with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Ivanda Hudiakova took home four rebounds and 13 points.

BOBCATS LEADERS

The Bobcats were led by MaKayla Smith with 16 points.

Mount Olive will return home as the Trojans take on Emmanuel College on Dec. 18 at 2:00 p.m.
