Irene Mozingo Whitfield

Irene Mozingo Whitfield

December 10, 2021, 90, La Grange –

Irene Mozingo Whitfield, 90, entered the presence of her Lord on Friday, December 10, 2021 while surrounded by her family. Irene was born in Wayne County to the late Herman Mozingo and Laura Etheridge Mozingo on July 10, 1931. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman “Monk” Whitfield; and a son, Dennis Whitfield.

Life for Irene revolved around her family. Every moment that she could spend with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was cherished. A lifetime member of Garris Chapel United Methodist Church, she was dedicated to her church family and served her Lord through her prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. As long as she was able, you could expect to find her in church every time the doors were open.

Other than her love of her Lord and family, Irene’s greatest love was shopping. No matter the store, you could rest assured she could have a good time perusing the merchandise. Even shopping at the grocery store was a grand event for Irene. She’d purchase a cart full of groceries every week, even though she lived alone and needed very little. When her children needed something in their own home, they knew a walk to moms was just as good as a trip to the store.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at Garris Chapel United Methodist Church at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2021 with Mr. Jimmy Vinson officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00 p.m. prior to the service. Committal will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Fairview Cemetery, La Grange.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Vicky Letchworth and husband, Mike; son, Ricky Whitfield and wife, Wendy; grandchildren, Michelle Garon and husband, Chris, Dana Sutton and husband, Ron, Jessica Simerly and husband Dennis, Brandy Edwards and husband, Thomas, and Jeremy Letchworth; and great-grandchildren, Evan Sutton, Brianna Garon, Emma Garon, Ella Sutton, Isabella Simerly, and Sawyer Edwards.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Irene’s special friend and caretaker, Norma Ascencio; her sister-in-law and caretaker, Peggy Whitfield; and to the compassionate staff of 3HC for their exemplary care shown to Irene in her final months.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.rousefh.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to 3HC, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
