Police: 2 killed, 4 hurt in Durham shooting

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Durham police say two young men are dead and four other young people are injured after a shooting. Police say officers responding to a report of a shooting around 3 a.m. Monday found a Hyundai SUV crashed into a utility pole and six people who had been shot. Police say two young men died on the scene. Three girls and one boy were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries and police say at least one of them was in critical condition. Police say the shooting did not appear to be a random incident.

Jan. 6 panel set to vote on holding Meadows in contempt

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection is set to recommend contempt charges against former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The expected action Monday evening comes as lawmakers are releasing new details about documents Meadows has handed over to the committee. In laying out the case for the contempt vote, the nine-member panel released a 51-page report Sunday evening that details its questions about the documents he has already provided. The panel did not release the documents but described some of them, including details about Meadows efforts’ to help Donald Trump overturn his defeat in the presidential election.

Sheriff: Suspects stole 3,600 pieces of mail in Carolinas

YORK, S.C. (AP) — Authorities have charged two people with stealing more than 3,600 pieces of mail in North and South Carolina. Sheriff Kevin Tolson of York County, South Carolina, says a man and a woman were arrested after a citizen called with a tip that someone was tossing mail out of a car in a Walmart parking lot. The sheriff’s office said Saturday that investigators recovered 74 packages and thousands of other pieces of mail taken from nearly 2,000 mailboxes on either side of the state line in the area of Charlotte, North Carolina. The sheriff said the parcels will be returned to their rightful owners in six counties. 

SHOOTING-ARRESTS

Suspect in western NC homicide picked up near coast

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Federal marshals have taken into custody at the North Carolina coast a suspect in a homicide last month in the mountains. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office announced that Alfred Louis Logan Jr. was picked up early Sunday in Elizabeth City without incident. He had been charged with murder but not arrested in the Nov. 18 shooting death of Kedrick Tevon Green of Arden. The Buncombe sheriff says the suspect’s girlfriend already was arrested in Alabama and faces accessory and obstruction charges related to Green’s shooting. A TV station in Alabama says warrants also have been issued for Logan and Calton for a shooting there last week. 

STATE PARK-FIRE

After fire’s containment, NC state park reopening to public

PINNACLE, N.C. (AP) — Nearly all of a North Carolina state park is reopening after a wildfire burned over 1,000 acres before it was contained earlier this month.  The Yadkin River section of Pilot Mountain State Park reopened Saturday. Most of the rest of the park will be accessible to visitors starting Monday. A trail will remain closed until a protective fence is rebuilt. The fire began Thanksgiving weekend due to an escaped campfire and ultimately covered about half of the park. The fire was declared fully contained on Dec. 4. There are still some spots that are smoldering.

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS

NC’s Roy Cooper elected to lead Democratic governors’ group

RALEIGH. N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has been formally chosen to lead the Democratic Governors Association next year. Association members elected Cooper to the job on Saturday at the group’s meeting in New Orleans. He’s been vice chair and chair-elect in 2021. Now he’ll spearhead efforts to help party nominees win more in a big gubernatorial year ahead. Thirty-six governorships are on the ballot in 2022. Republican governors currently lead 27 of the 50 states. Cooper is succeeding Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico. The association also elected New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy as vice chair and chair-elect for 2022.

Police: Warrants issued for NC man wanted in 3 deaths

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — Police in a northeastern North Carolina city have obtained murder warrants against a local man formally sought for the deaths of three people earlier this month, including a 3-year-old girl.  An Elizabeth City police news release Friday said that Rickey Lewis Etheridge Jr. is now formally wanted in the Dec. 2 shooting deaths, and is considered armed and dangerous.” Police arriving to a report of gunshots at Perry and Jordan streets found several people wounded. Those who died were Jaquan White of Elizabeth City and De‘Shay Berry and Allura Pledger, both of Manteo. A police officer said Saturday the case is still an “active investigation.”

Ex-phone company worker in NC convicted in cellphone scheme

NEW BERN, N.. (AP) — Federal government prosecutors say a former telephone company worker has been convicted of using stolen personal information to sell expensive phones on the black market. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Raleigh said that Alejandro Garlynn Williams was found guilty on Friday on 21 counts of conspiracy, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft at the close of a trial. Sentencing will occur later. The government says Willams and a co-conspirator hatched a scheme whereby his cohort passed along personal information to Williams, who worked at an AT&T store in Fayetteville. That’s when phones were issued and sold elsewhere. AT&T generated more than $85,000 in losses.
