County Moves Forward With Constructing New Detention Center

Wayne County is moving ahead with the construction of its new jail.

Earlier this month, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners agreed to initiate Phase 3 of its contract with Moseley Architects for the full design of the jail’s construction.

Commissioner Joe Daughtery says the Facilities Committee has seen the need for a new detention center rather than trying to renovate the existing facility.

Daughtery says the county now needs to determine how it will move forward with the construction method, which could be:

  • Construction manager-at-risk
  • Design-build
  • Putting it out to bid to pre-qualified contractors with jail construction experience.

The construction method will be decided at a forthcoming meeting.

The new Wayne County Sheriff’s jail will be located on William Street next to the Carey Winders Detention Facility.
