Freedom Tree Rededication To Mark Start Of 24-Hour POW/MIA Event

Goldsboro will rededicate its Freedom Tree while paying tribute to those who have not returned from combat.

As part of NC Freedom Fest activities this week, The Freedom Tree at the intersection of Center and Spruce streets in Downtown Goldsboro will be rededicated during a ceremony beginning at 3 PM this Thursday, September 16.  The Freedom Tree was planted in honor of Captain Peter Cleary who was shot down and declared “missing in action” in 1972.

Following the rededication, volunteer flag bearers will continuously carry the POW/MIA Flag while volunteers read the names of the thousands of American service member prisoners of war and missing in action.  The 24-hour event is sponsored by the Air Force Sergeants Association Chapter 371 from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
