Sharon Lee Newnam Warren

August 28, 2021, 91, Goldsboro –

Sharon Lee Newnam Warren, 91, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Brookdale Country Day Road. Born in Guilford County on June 4, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Newnam and Thelma Stone Newnam.

In addition to her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Elwood Gene Warren. Sharon is survived by her sons, Elwood Gene “Rocky” Warren, Jr. and Stephen Reed Warren and wife, Cheryl; grandchildren Sarah Damon and husband, Aaron, Stephen Warren, and Emily Warren; great-grandchildren, Addison and Hadley Damon; brother Larry Newnam and wife, Nancy; sister Beverly Welch and husband, Frank; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sharon, better known as “Shay” had a truly magnetic personality. She brought out the best in everyone she encountered. A graduate of UNC-Greensboro, her love for others was evident in a teaching career that spanned more than 40 years. Shay was the epitome of what an elementary school teacher should be. She worked in the public schools of NC serving Charlotte, Greensboro, and Lumberton. Incredibly patient, she was direct and honest, but always polite. She was selfless, always putting others’ needs above her own. Shay was simply an extraordinary wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. A lady of great faith, Shay loved and worshiped her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

After Shay’s husband’s death, with age and increasing health problems, her neighbor, Janice Boyd remained a steadfast friend and assisted Shay in so many ways. The family also appreciates the entire administration and staff at Brookdale Assisted Living facility on Country Day Road. A very special, heartfelt thanks goes out to nurse Carol McDuffie, who treated and took care of Shay in the last few months of her life with amazing kindness, as if Shay was her own mother.

The family will have a private celebration of Shay’s life at a later date in the NC mountains, a place where she and her late husband honeymooned, vacationed regularly and found great solace.
