About 16 Miles Of U.S. 117 To Be Resurfaced

A long swath of U.S. 117 in Wayne County will be improved with new asphalt, high-visibility pavement markings and snow-plowable raised reflectors.

S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson will mill away the top layer of asphalt and resurface the four-lane highway between the U.S. 70 interchange, including its ramps, and the Wayne-Duplin county line – a distance of some 16 miles. The blue line on this Google map roughly corresponds to the scope of the project.

In addition, the paved shoulders will be widened along U.S. 117 between the Country Club Road and O’Berry Road interchanges, which were constructed within the last few years.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded the nearly $6 million contract, which was the lowest, responsive bid of three proposals opened Aug. 17. The winning bid was also 12% below engineering estimates.

The contractor may begin after Sept. 27 and will have until the fall of 2022 to complete the improvements. During construction, drivers will encounter daytime lane closures and periodic delays. They should slow down and be alert traveling through the work zone.
