Nannie Laura Mewborn Fields

July 29, 2021, 90, LaGrange –

Nannie Laura Mewborn Fields, 90, was received by her Heavenly Father in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 29, 2021. Nan was born November 15, 1930 in the Mewborn Homeplace in the Jason Community of Greene County to the late Titus George and Mary Elizabeth Moye Mewborn.

Nan, as she preferred to be called, was a profoundly caring person with a kind, gentle spirit that radiated compassion. Everyone who knew her loved her, and everyone she knew, she also loved. One of Nan’s greatest gifts was her concern for others. Even towards the end of her life, she was more concerned with the comfort and wishes of others above her own. She was tender-hearted and lived simply. She wanted the best for others. Nan loved and lived Christ-like, radiating His light in the world. She found great joy in service to others. Nan had a gift for encouraging others, and making you feel important.

Nan enjoyed working in her garden. She loved growing fruits and vegetables which she shared with her family and friends. She immensely enjoyed seeing God’s hands create nature’s beauty. She was a meticulous record keeper, even in her gardening and canning. She kept track of every jar canned and how well her plants produced over time.

Nan was a writer. She loved writing cards and letters to family, friends, and fellow church members. She would always give sound advice and loved to share the good news of the Lord with anyone who would listen. She fulfilled Christ’s great commission by making disciples of others. Nan loved her church, La Grange First Free Will Baptist, where she was a member for many years. She loved to study and read the Bible. Many would come to her with biblical questions or requesting scriptures fitting their current need. She never failed to find the appropriate verses or prayers.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Gary Fields and wife, Pat, of La Grange, and Donna Fields Mann of Deep Run; eight grandchildren, Brad Fields and wife, Carmen, of Jason, Brooke Fields of Kinston, Rachel Mann Gray and husband, Ashley, of La Grange, Rebecca Mann Hardy of Vanceboro, Houston Mann and wife, Melissa, Jim Liverman and wife, Casey, of Ahoskie, Angie and Billy Lassiter of Ahoskie; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Ancel Mewborn and wife, Sylvia, of Chapel Hill; sister, Jean Mewborn Mrosla and husband, Richard of Durham; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Fields; brothers, John Titus Mewborn and J.P. Mewborn; and sisters, Mary Moye Mewborn and Ida Wooten Mewborn Tripp.

Family and friends will be received Friday, July 30, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home of Gary and Pat Fields, 5486 Highway 903, La Grange. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Mewborn Cemetery with Pastors Ronnie Hobgood and Scott Hardy officiating.

Nan’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Community Home Care & Hospice, specifically Leslie and Desny, for their compassion and caring over the last year and her two special caregivers, Lori and Cindy, who made it possible for her to stay in her home.

Memorials may be made to La Grange First Free Will Baptist Church, 802 South Caswell Street, La Grange, NC 28551. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
