David Jennings “DJ” Pelt

July 29, 2021, 94, Goldsboro –

David Jennings “DJ” Pelt, age 94, entered eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at his home. Born in Wayne County on March 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Robert Monroe Pelt and Essie Garris Pelt. He married the love of his life, Mary Smith Pelt, (aka Inspector 12) and they celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on July 4th.

DJ was a veteran of WWII, serving in both the Marine Corp and the Army. He was employed for 30 years as a pipefitter with EI DuPont and retired in 1982. He proudly served as a Wayne County Commissioner for three terms. After retirement, DJ spent many years enjoying the outdoors, raising farm animals, serving as the local neighborhood plumber, and playing golf with the Southeast Senior Golf Association, where he made many new friends. He enjoyed spending time and sharing conversation with the neighborhood farmers at Coker’s Feed Mill and Larry’s Garage. And until May 26th of this year, he spent many happy hours on the lawn mower, mowing grass for all his family and spending time outdoors watching his grandson and great grandson.

For over 64 years, DJ worshiped faithfully as a devoted member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. His service to the church included serving as a SS teacher, SS Superintendent, Church Treasurer and a Church Trustee.

DJ was truly a man of God, a man of his word and he loved and cherished his family. His wish was to be the oldest man in the Hood Swamp community and be lovingly remembered as “Old Man Pelt.”

A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the Pikeville Cemetery, Mt. Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, NC. The family will receive friends following the service, and other times at the home. Mr. Pelt will lie in state on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Mary, daughters, Ceia Kay Wene and husband, Peter; Mary Susan Miller, grandson, Bobby Wayne Smith, II and his wife, Julie; and a great-grandson, Kenan Isaac Smith, a sister, Irene Aycock and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Marvin Garris, John Pelt and Freeman Pelt; sisters, Sadie Newcomb Rivenbark, Emily Pate Murphy, Hester Creech, Ava Stafford, Lola Langston and Connie Pelt and his son-in-law, Tom Miller.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Woods Grove Pentecostal FWB Memorial Fund, 4009 Central Heights Rd, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
