Verla Chestnutt Tew, 82, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by her family. Born in Wayne County on February 13, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Willie James Chestnutt and Mary Pate Chestnutt.

In addition to her parents, Verla was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John David Tew; and brothers, Elwood Chestnutt, Rudolph Chestnutt, and Arnold Chestnutt.

Verla is survived by her daughter, Joy Tew Bissette and husband, Dennis of Lucama; grandchildren, Katlin Bissette, Erika Waniorek-Caslavka (Brandon), and Alecia Mears; great-grandchild, Brayden; sisters, Mary Chestnutt Parks and Eloise Chestnutt Baker; and sisters-in-law, Jeri Tew Schumacher and Kay Chestnutt.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Verla’s life at 12:00 noon at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Roy Savage officiating.
