Lucille Hare Smith, 90, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Wayne County on November 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Eli Craft Hare and Jackie Lancaster Hare.

In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her sisters, Christine Hare Turner and Ruby Hare Vaughn; and brother, William Hare.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 69 years, C. Ray Smith; sister, Sophia Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.

Lucille worked in sales at the local Woolworth’s Department Store. She later worked as the secretary at Woods Grove Church where she was a dedicated and faithful member. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years at Woods Grove and was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Lucille also served as a volunteer at Wayne Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Pinewood Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

A service to celebrate Lucille’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021 at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Barry Teague officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
