County Planning New Jail Facility For William Street

Wayne County is planning to build a new jail.

County Manager Craig Honeycutt highlighted plans for the new $25 million detention facility during last week’s Operation Unite Goldsboro Community Roundtable.

Honeycutt says the existing jail is about 30-years-old and is not in good shape as it is used 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The new jail will replace the existing one in Downtown Goldsboro attached to the Wayne County Courthouse.

Honeycutt says the options for the old jail building include office space and court space.

The new jail will be located on William Street near the Carey A. Winders Detention Center.

The property tax increase in this year’s county budget will fund four new facility projects, including the new Wayne County Jail, Fremont Elementary School, Health/DSS Human Services Building, and the completion of the Wayne Community College Advanced Manufacturing Center.
