Lawyers: Pathologist says Black man shot 5 times by deputies
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — Attorneys for the family of a Black man shot and killed by deputies in North Carolina say an independent autopsy shows that he was shot five times, including a shot in the back of the head. Attorney Wayne Kendall said Tuesday that an independent pathologist hired by Andrew Brown Jr.’s family examined his body. The doctor noted four wounds to the right arm and one to the head, Kendall said during a news conference. Brown was shot Wednesday by deputies serving drug-related search and arrest warrants in the eastern North Carolina town of Elizabeth City.

Ex-Justice Cheri Beasley joins North Carolina Senate race
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The first Black woman to serve as chief justice on North Carolina’s highest court has announced her entry into the state’s U.S. Senate race. Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley announced her campaign on Tuesday. She joins four other Democrats vying for the party nomination for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Richard Burr. Beasley is the only Democrat in the race who has won a statewide contest. Whoever wins the primary will advance to a costly general election fight that could determine whether Democrats maintain their power in the chamber.

Cooper address focuses on COVID, finding agreement with GOP
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper recalled the pain and courage stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and pitched for cooperation with legislative Republicans during his State of the State address. Cooper gave the televised speech Monday night to a joint session of the General Assembly in the House chamber. He mourned the deaths of more than 12,500 people from the coronavirus in North Carolina while praising the work of medical workers, teachers and the National Guard. He asked GOP lawmakers to work with him to expand Medicaid, boost teacher pay and build infrastructure.

Attorney: Black man killed by deputies shot in back of head
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) — Attorneys for the family of a Black man killed by deputies in North Carolina say he was shot in the back of the head and had his hands on the car steering wheel when they opened fire. Their comments came Monday after body camera video was shown to Andrew Brown Jr.’s relatives. Attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter watched a 20-second portion of the video with the family and said Brown did not appear to be a threat to officers as he backed his vehicle out and tried to drive away. Brown’s death last Wednesday led to nightly protests in the town of Elizabeth City. The video has not been made public.

Population growth gives North Carolina a 14th US House seat
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina has gained another seat in Congress. The U.S. Census Bureau said North Carolina’s resident population was 10.44 million in April 2020, up 9.5% from a decade earlier. The numbers released Monday reflect a steadily growing population as people arrive for jobs and retirement. The additional U.S. House seat is the 14th for North Carolina. It marks the third time in the past four census cycles that the state will have increased the size of its congressional delegation. One expert says the new seat will likely be drawn in an urban or suburban area between Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh.

Apple announces 1st East Coast campus in North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Apple plans to invest more than $1 billion in North Carolina to build the company’s first East Coast campus. The move is expected to bring at least 3,000 new jobs to the state. The company announced Monday that the development is part of an effort to up its U.S. investment as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The North Carolina project falls under a commitment from Apple to invest $430 billion and add a total of 20,000 new jobs over the next five years. Apple is expanding its teams in Colorado, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington, New York, California and other states.

North Carolina man accused in death of Oklahoma man at bar
WASHINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina have arrested a suspect in the death of an Oklahoma man at a bar. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that deputies responding to the Beavers Dam Bar near Chocowinity at around 2 a.m. on Saturday found 51-year-old Tracy Herman of Soper, Oklahoma, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said they learned two bar patrons got into an argument before 30-year-old Mark Clark Campbell III punched Herman in the head, knocking him unconscious, then hit him several more times before he fled. Campbell, who turned himself in, is charged with an open count of murder and is being held without bond.

MLK memorial effort in Boston gets $1M from Bank of America
BOSTON (AP) — The organization planning a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King in Boston is getting a $1 million grant from Bank of America. Company officials said Monday the grant to King Boston will support the creation of the sculpture memorial on on Boston Common that will feature interlocking arms and is entitled “The Embrace”. It also supports a new Center for Economic Justice to promote solutions to further racial and economic justice and a public ideas series that engages the community in anti-racist discourse through the arts and humanities. The executive director of King Boston says the organization has now raised about $13.5 million toward its $15 million target.
