Rev. Mary Frances Powell Carter, 67, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021 at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Wayne County on December 25, 1953, she was the daughter of Mavis Arlene Bell Powell of Mt. Olive and the late James R. Powell, Jr.

Mary was a dedicated and faithful servant to her Lord Jesus Christ. She was an evangelist for many years and was an ordained minister associated with the Spirit of Pentecost Holiness Church. Mary initiated the prayer breakfast group at the Southern Belle Restaurant in Mt. Olive and led it for over 25 years. She enjoyed going out and visiting with her friends and family, cooking, and sewing. Mary was a long-time member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Mary’s life at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Bishop Jimmy Whitfield and Rev. Steve Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Attendees are asked to wear a face-covering and practice social distancing.

In addition to her mother, Mary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ronnie Lee Carter; brothers, James Samuel Powell of Princeton and Robert Gary Powell (Kay) of Mt. Olive; sister, Teresa Worley (Rick) of Smithfield; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

We would like to give a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Davita South of Goldsboro for the love and care they provided for Mary. Simple words cannot express our gratitude. Also, a thank you to the staff of Wayne UNC Health Care who lovingly cared for Mary in her final days.
