Wayne Community College is offering an “Automotive Boot Camp” this semester that will provide an overview of automotive repair.
Class will be held in the new automotive and collision repair facility (“Ash Building”), 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 12-May 6. The in-person portions of the course will include some lecture time and the rest will be devoted to hands-on instruction. Supplemental materials and assignments will be provided online.
“This is a very general course that will cover maintenance and light repair,” said WCC Transportation Department Chair Kevin Jordan.
The course prepares individuals for an entry-level position as automotive service technicians who inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative fuels. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications.
“It will be perfectly fine for the nonprofessional who wants to work on his or her own vehicle” as well as someone who wants to break into the profession, Jordan said.
Topics may include computer skills for transportation, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, suspension and steering, automatic transmissions and transaxle, engine repair, heating and air conditioning, manual drivetrain and axles, and alternative fuel technologies.
Emphasis will be placed on subjects that students say they need to learn more about, Jordan explained.
The registration fee is $180.
