Geraldine “Jerri” Worrell McRoy

November 30, 2020, 89

Geraldine “Jerri” Worrell McRoy, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 30, 2020 at Springmoor Life Care Community in Raleigh.

Jerri was born at home in Grantham on February 4, 1931 to the late Larry Robert Worrell and Ona Pate Worrell. She was married for almost 68 years to W.D. (Mac) McRoy, Jr., who preceded her in death on September 11, 2020.

Jerri was a member of both St. Luke and St. Paul United Methodist Churches. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from East Carolina University in 1952. She taught for many years at both the elementary school and the community college levels. However, her true joy was her roles of devoted wife, loving mother and generous Mema. She tirelessly supported her husband’s passion for sports and encouraged her children to pursue their interests by affording them every opportunity to achieve their educational goals and participate in extracurricular activities. Alongside her husband, she volunteered, served on boards, and was instrumental in making a difference in the lives of individuals with special needs.

Later in life, Jerri enjoyed gardening, taking trips with her husband and family, and visiting friends. She particularly loved all her time spent with her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and no one ever left from a visit with Mema empty handed. She dedicated her life to serving others, especially her family, and was always putting the needs of others before her own.

A private service to celebrate Jerri’s life will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. James H. Harry officiating.

Jerri is survived by her children, Leigh Edwards, Larry McRoy, David McRoy, Ginny Vickery and husband John, Rebekah Williams and husband Travis; grandchildren, Alise Fredrickson and husband Nate, Sarah Benko and husband Steven, Anna Potter and husband Jacob, Chelsea Vickery, Jacob Vickery, and wife Jasmine, Casey Vickery, Caroline Williams, Langdon Williams and Molly Williams; great-grandchildren, Clara Rose Potter, Von Potter, Sullivan Potter, Nolan Fredrickson, Walt Fredrickson, Katie Benko, Allison Benko, Ryan Benko, Thomas Benko, and Grayson Vickery; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Esther Peacock and Margaret “Pee Wee” Hood; and brothers, Thad Worrell and Bob Worrell.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in her memory to Springmoor Endowment Fund 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615 or St. Paul United Methodist Church 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, NC 27530.
