Library Summer Reading Program A Success

Wayne County Public Library had 640 patrons from around the county register for the virtual Summer Reading Program. Alongside fun story times, crafts, and STEM activities, participants in the Summer Reading Program were encouraged to fill out a reading log for prizes using either books checked out at the library, or the free online eBook and eAudiobook resources offered at the library such as Libby/Overdrive, NC Digital Kids Library, and Bookflix.

“We had a family with two young boys who raved about this year’s summer reading program. Mom and Dad both told us how much the boys enjoyed the videos and activity packet. They said their 10 year old was reading all the time – they’d go looking for him and he’d be reading. He’d never been a reader until this summer and now is a voracious reader. He turned in his reading log with 25 hours read – our top reader this year at Steele.” said Stephanie, Branch Manager at Steele Memorial Library.

Prizes included notebooks, free books, and toys. Children who read for two hours were able to put their name on a castle brick at Goldsboro Library, or a dragon scale at the Steele Memorial Library. Participants from all branches read a total of 1839 hours throughout the Summer Reading Program.

In the fall, Wayne County Public libraries will continue to work together to provide all children in the county with fun and educational virtual programs. Beginning the first week of September, there will be three programs each week: a tip video for parents of young children, a story time, and a program for elementary aged children. Library staff will be visiting different places in the community, sharing some great books, and learning about all kinds of fun traditions and activities that can be done at home. The branches will alternate themes and weeks, so children will see a different set of familiar faces each week.
