Coach: Students Ready To Play Football In February

Those Friday night lights won’t be lit until late February.

This week, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced an amended schedule for all high school sports in the state due to COVID-19.

That includes a late-February start to the high school football season.

Steve Brooks, Head Coach of C.B. Aycock High’s football team, says he wasn’t totally surprised by the move.

Brooks says a challenge will be the overlap in the new schedule for multi-sport athletes.

He says they’re hoping to start some conditioning workouts for football players as the COVID-19 restrictions are eased.

Under the NCHSAA’s new calendar, the first high school football practice can be held February 8th and the shortened regular season begins February 26th.

No matter what or when, Coach Brooks says the students are ready and excited to play.
