Untreated Wastewater Overflows In Mount Olive

Heavy rains are to blame for the release of over 100,000 gallons of untreated wastewater in Mount Olive.

The Town of Mount Olive says the sanitary sewer overflow totaling approximately 135,000 gallons occurred Sunday.

The overflow was discovered around 5 AM Sunday and was still ongoing as of 11 AM.

The Division of Water Quality has been notified of the spills.

According to the town, the spill is the result of torrential rainfall over an eight hour period.

The Town of Mount Olive is working to resolve the issues with inflow and infiltration into the sewer collections system and to address land application issues at the wastewater treatment plant itself.

Funding has been secured to address issues at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
