Commissioners Discuss COVID Testing, Reopening Measures

The coronavirus pandemic continues to be a hot topic for the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.

At Wednesday’s county board meeting, County Manager Craig Honeycutt brought up the success of the recent free testing sessions, and said nearly 150 residents took advantage of Tuesday’s free testing at Spring Creek Middle School.

Commissioner Ed Cromartie asked about the type of testing that was being offered and wondered if it was the only possibility.

Commissioner Joe Daughtery says we can’t just hunker down at home and stay there since the virus is going to be with us for some time.

With a differing opinion Commissioner Cromartie cautioned against a hasty return to normalcy especially when the older population still seems particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.

Commissioner Ray Mayo noted continued school closures would be tough on parents.

Schools and many businesses across North Carolina continue to wait for guidance and decisions on the next phases of reopening as the state watches increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases.

The Wayne County Health Department and Wayne UNC Health Care are offering another round of free COVID-19 testing today, Thursday, July 9, at Spring Creek Middle School from 9 AM until 12 PM.
