Board Of Education Announces Principal Changes

On Thursday, the Wayne County Board of Education approved the following principal changes during a Special Called Meeting:

Wayne Middle/High Academy principal, John Bell, was named the new principal of Charles B. Aycock High School. Mr. Bell has taught at the elementary level, served as an assistant principal in grades K-12, and a principal in grades 6-12. In addition, he has served in director roles for both the Career and College Promise (CCP) Program and Safety and Operations for Johnston County Schools. Mr. Bell holds a bachelor’s degree from Elon College, a teaching certification from Saint Augustine’s College and a master’s degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

Dillard Middle principal, Dr. Theresa Cox, was named principal and director of alternative learning programs at Wayne Middle/High Academy. Dr. Cox is a 25 year veteran educator. She has taught and has been an assistant principal and principal at the middle and high school levels. She has also served as a principal of an alternative school. Dr. Cox holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She holds a master’s degree in school administration and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Fayetteville State University.

“Mr. Bell and Dr. Cox are very excited about the opportunities to advance these schools,” states Dr. James Merrill, WCPS Acting Superintendent. “Mr. Bell brings with him a wealth of experience helping engage students on a social emotional level and connecting students to college programs that are available to them. Dr. Cox is looking for a new opportunity to help engage struggling students and is very interested in leading efforts to improve how alternative learning occurs in Wayne County.”

Both Mr. Bell and Dr. Cox will transition to their new roles on July 1.
