Wayne County Public Schools is taking immediate action to address a nearly $5 million fund balance deficit.
On Tuesday, WCPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore told the Board of Education about the deficit. The Board of Education accepted Dr. Dunsmore’s resignation on Wednesday.
The Wayne County Board of Education approved hiring Dr. James Merrill as the interim superintendent Wednesday. Merrill will begin as the acting superintendent and will transition to the interim superintendent role once Dr. Dunsmore’s resignation is effective June 26th. Dr. Merrill will be paid $22,587 per month for his services until a new superintendent is appointed or through December 31st, whichever occurs first.
Additionally, the Board of Education hired School Operations Specialists, LLC, to thoroughly review the operations of the WCPS Finance Department and provide technical support to the finance staff in closing out the fiscal year and making final budget amendments for the current 2019-2020 budget. Under the agreement, School Operations Specialists, LLC will be paid the “rate of $140 per hour not to exceed $41,000 at the State per diem and mileage at the IRS rate.”
