Wayne UNC To Host Community Blood Drive on Friday

Wayne UNC Health Care will host a Community Blood Drive in partnership with Wayne County, The Blood Connection (TBC) and The Maxwell Center on Friday, June 5 at the Maxwell Center at 3114 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro.

The drive, which will be held from11 a.m. to 6 p.m., will offer free COVID-19 antibody testing for all donors. Donors will also receive a $10 Visa gift card.

“After an overwhelming, positive response from our donors through a poll, The Blood Connection is proud to offer this COVID-19 antibody test to our donors at no cost,” said Delisa English, President and CEO of TBC.

The antibody test is not a diagnostic test for COVID-19 infection and it doesn’t prove an individual has immunity to the virus. Research of COVID-19 antibodies is still ongoing.

Once the donor has made a complete blood donation, TBC will make antibody results available within seven business days by means of its electronic portal. Donors can opt out of testing if they prefer.

It’s also important to note that there is no evidence of COVID-19 transmission through blood donation or transfusion, according to TBC Medical Director Dr. Robert Rainer. “It’s safe to donate blood, and your donation stays right here in this community,” said Janie Jaberg, Wayne UNC President and CEO. “Your donation will save lives.”

The community is encouraged to participate in the drive while practicing social distancing by remaining in their vehicles until it is their time to donate. Potential donors must be 17 years of age or older, weighing at least 110 pounds an feeling healthy and well. 16-year-old donors can donate with a parental consent form.

Donors can save time and ensure social distancing and limited interaction by making an appointment online. Appointments are available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
