An early Sunday morning vehicle crash sent New Hope and El-Roy firefighters as well as EMS to the 500 block of North Beston Road. As fire and EMS arrived on the scene, they found a single vehicle accident with the car upside down in a ditch engulfed in flames. The driver was nowhere to be found. The car had run off the road, hit a concrete culvert driveway and flipped upside down into the ditch. Teresa Jones, who lives next door, heard the crash and saw the driver trying to get out of the burning vehicle. She found a tire tool laying on the ground and used it to knock out the back window to free the driver. Once the driver got out, he fled the scene before fire and EMS arrived. Several North Carolina Highway Patrol units arrived at the scene and started the search for the driver. That section of Beston Road was close to traffic while the operation was in progress.
