MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive’s Collegiate FFA (CFFA) chapter continued one of its most meaningful traditions this year, providing warm winter coats to children in need through its annual Coats for Kids initiative. This year’s effort supplied 147 students at Brogden Primary School with brand-new coats, with additional coats set aside to meet emerging needs in other local schools.
The project, led by the UMO Collegiate FFA, an official NC FFA Alumni and Supporters chapter, remains one of the organization’s largest community service efforts. CFFA President Emily Hodges said the group works year-round to prepare for the giveaway, coordinating fundraising, ordering, and distribution alongside longtime supporters and campus advisors.
Agricultural Mechanics Instructor Gerald Barlowe, who stepped into the role of CFFA advisor this year, experienced the project for the first time and said the impact was immediate and unforgettable.
“As the new advisor for the UMO CFFA, this was my first experience with Coats for Kids,” Barlowe said. “This was one of the most heartwarming activities I have ever been involved in. Seeing the faces of those kids as they got to pick out a coat and hat was unbelievable. It really brings home the true meaning of Christmas.”
Barlowe offered special appreciation for longtime advisor Dr. Stephen Edwards, who has helped guide the Coats for Kids initiative for many years. “Dr. Edwards guided us through the fundraising, ordering of coats, and distribution of the coats with local school partners. We could not have done this activity without his help,” Barlowe noted.
This year, Brogden Primary School Counselor Kanesha Jones helped coordinate the school’s participation and distribution efforts. “On behalf of the Brogden Primary School Family, I want to personally thank the UMO Collegiate FFA for continuing to partner with our school and provide coats for our students in need,” she said. “Their dedicated acts of service truly make a difference in the lives of our students. We are grateful to be a part of the efforts that reach so many of our BPS students.”
The Coats for Kids initiative has become a signature example of the University’s commitment to service and community connection. As it continues to grow, the project not only provides warmth but also fosters a spirit of compassion among UMO students.
This project would not be possible without the support and contributions provided by individuals and community organizations.
