Joseph “Joe” Claude Lyon, Jr., 76, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025 at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born on February 4, 1949 in Maryland, he was son to the late Joseph Lyon, Sr. and Ruth Zuknick Lyon.
Above all, Joe held a deep and abiding love for his family, whom he regarded as the center of his life. He treasured the time spent with his grandchildren, finding great joy in doting on them, and was affectionately known as the “Best Poppie Ever.” Joe honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for 24 years, including distinguished service during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. Following his military career, he continued to contribute to his community as a dedicated welding instructor, sharing his expertise with countless students over many years.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Virginia Morrison Lyon; his children, Dale Casey and wife, Leslie, Joseph W. Lyon, and Wendy Tilghman and husband, Frank; his grandchildren, Brandon McCullen and wife, Elizabeth, Brittney Allen and husband, Pat, Chris Lyon, Kaylee Lyon, Cody Casey, Matti Lyon, Holly Casey, Jessica Graham (Dylan Reason) and Jack Lyon; his great-grandchildren, Bryellah McCullen, Rory Allen, Archer Allen, and Briley Reason; and his siblings, Gary Lyon, Eugene Lyon and wife, Joan, and Mary Heath and husband, Dave.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Lori Snyder.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2025 at Goldsboro Worship Center. A service to honor Joe’s life will be held in the sanctuary at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor Danny Johnson officiating. Services will conclude at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.
