Wayne County Commissioners Launch Application Process to Fill Vacant Board Seat

Wayne County, N.C. — The Wayne County Board of Commissioners has officially opened the application process to fill the vacant at-large seat left after the unexpected passing of Commissioner George Wayne Aycock, Jr. Aycock had served on the Board since 2012.

During their December 2, 2025 meeting, commissioners unanimously approved the procedure that will guide the appointment. Interested residents must submit a letter of interest, résumé of qualifications, and references no later than December 22, 2025, at 5 p.m.

Application materials should be sent to County Clerk Carol Bowden either by email or mail:

Candidates will be interviewed by the Board on January 6, 2026, at the conclusion of the regularly scheduled commissioners’ meeting. The Board is expected to take formal action on or after that date, with a statutory deadline of January 17, 2026, to make the appointment.

As required by state law, the Board has also notified the Wayne County Republican Party Executive Committee, requesting an official party recommendation for the seat. The position must be filled by a registered Republican, as Aycock was elected as part of the GOP.

Commissioners say they look forward to selecting a committed leader who will continue Aycock’s legacy of service to Wayne County.
