Walter Eugene Lewis, 83, peacefully passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Wayne County on October 9, 1942, he was the son of the late Lonnie Max and Ruby Bruce Lewis.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his brothers, John Lewis and Dennis Lewis.
Walter is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Judy Lewis; sons and their wives, Robert and Stephanie Lewis, Jeff and Jennifer Lewis, and Eric and Jennifer Lewis; grandchildren, Camden, Kira, Dax, Braxton, Austin, Annslea, Jackson, Hunter, and Connor; and two nieces.
Walter proudly served in the United States Army as a Military Police officer, spending his service years stationed in Germany. After returning home, Walter built a long and respected career with AT&T, working as a lineman until his retirement.
Outside of his profession, Walter found joy in the simple but meaningful pursuits he loved. An avid golfer, he cherished time spent on the course with friends. He was also a skilled woodworker whose craftsmanship reflected his patience and eye for detail.
One of Walter’s greatest joys was coaching his sons’ baseball teams. He took pride in encouraging his boys, teaching them not only the fundamentals of the game but also lessons in teamwork, respect, and perseverance.
A man of faith and humility, Walter was a devoted member of New Hope Church.
A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025 at New Hope Church with Pastor Steve Wellman officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
