George Summerlin, 90, died Sunday morning, November 16 at Wayne UNC Hospital in Goldsboro. He is survived by his loving grandchildren; Stacey Capps, Joshua Summerlin, Sarah Summerlin, and April Thigpen and her husband, Derrick; great-grandchildren, Tyler Summerlin, Jacksyn Capps, Avery Thigpen, Arya Thigpen, and Jasmine Thigpen. George is also survived by a brother, Rev. Ashley Summerlin and his wife Cynthia of Seven Springs; and two sisters-in-law, Annie Ruth Overton, and Shirley Overton of Mount Olive; and a nephew Eddie Ray; and his K-9 companion, Chloe.
George was the son of the late Grady and Cora Wellington Summerlin, and was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Overton Summerlin; his children, George Ray Summerlin, Ronnie Summerlin, and Ricky Summerlin; along with his siblings, Jinny Rouse, Edith Kornegay, Annie Ruth Grady, Christine Jackson, Polly Williams, Dorothy Hill, Haywood Summerlin, and Charlie Summerlin. He was also preceded in death by a daughter in law, Fran Summerlin.
Services for Mr. Summerlin will take place on Friday, November 21 at eleven o’clock in the morning in the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home. His brother, Rev. Ashley Summerlin, will officiate the service, with burial immediately following at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley. Military honors by Seymour Johnson will be presented. The family will receive friends during the hour prior to the service, beginning at ten o’clock.
Having come from a large family, George took great pride in his grandchildren. He had attended Jones Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He retired from the Air Force having served proudly as a Military Police officer, and had earned the rank of Master Sergent. The family fondly remembers and will cherish those delicious Sunday afternoon meals he loved to provide, and spending time around the dining table always brought them close together.
