James Parks “J.P.” Smith, Jr., 87 passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at Willow Creek Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Wayne County on December 21, 1937, he was son to the late James Parks Smith, Sr. and Mabel Viola Smith.

J.P. was a devoted farmer who took great pride in his life’s work, as long as his health allowed. His dedication to farming was matched only by his love for family and friends. J.P. especially enjoyed preparing meals, and spending time with the ones he cared about. His tough demeanor masked his warmth and generous heart.

J.P. is survived by his sister, Shirley Smith Graham; nephew, James Smith Whitley, Sr. and wife, Cindy, great-nephew’s, James Smith Whitley, Jr. and wife, Cassidy and Matthew Jackson and wife, Caroline.

In addition to his parents, J.P. was preceded in death by his sisters, Alease Hamer and Inez Strickland; and his brothers, Raymond Smith, Walter William Smith and James McGee Smith; and his niece, Lavee Hamer.

A graveside service to honor J.P,’s life will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Smith Family Cemetery with Pastor Otto Griffin officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards at the cemetery.
